Did you know that monotropism and grinding for legendary armor in Guild Wars 2 go really well together?

Well, they do.

I’ve been eating, sleeping (ha!), and pooping (gross) the grind for weeks now, and it’s starting to pay off. Yesterday, I unlocked my third piece of legendary armor.

If you aren’t familiar with Guild Wars 2, each class can wear one and only one armor weight: light, medium, or heavy. Each set of armor is six pieces (excluding trinkets, which are sort of armor but have their own legendary crafting paths). That means crafting 18 pieces of legendary armor in all, if I want to outfit all my characters.

I’ve just unlocked piece number 3.

After weeks.

To be fair, crafting legendary gear in Guild Wars 2 isn’t supposed to be easy. It’s supposed to be 20 miles of long, hard road that – once one reaches the end – pays off in huge quality of life benefits that make playing various classes and builds much easier. For one, all legendary gear can be shared by all the characters on one’s account. Three sets of armor is all you will ever need.

But it’s very, very grindy and all my tentacles are heavily invested to the point I’m having trouble getting stuff done in real life. Not “call the authorities; he can’t cope” trouble. I’m having trouble stepping away from the grind, and my other interests are suffering.

To wit: music.

House music isn’t just therapy to me; it’s therapy.

I need the controlled noise and melodies to counteract all the noise and insanity I can’t control. But every time I pull out my DJ controller and fire up the Beatport link, I find my tentacles drifting back to exactly how much work it will take to unlock the next piece of leggie armor. (I have an Excel workbook. It has several spreadsheets. Drool.)

The solution? Guild Wars 2-themed DJ sets!

No, no, no. I don’t mean I’m playing music from the soundtrack. I don’t think any of it has been house-ified (it would sound weird if it were) and isn’t available on Beatport to stream anyway. I mean EDM where the tracks sound like something one would hear at an Asuran dance party, or drifting out the window of a tavern in Amnoon (if Amnoon were on Ibiza).

I’m playing the first set tonight at 5:00 PM Los Angeles time (Pacific Daylight or Standard or whatever it is now). It’s called “Welcome to Maguuma,” so expect some tribal beats. Next week is the aforementioned Asuran dance party, and then possible… Top of the Charrs?

I swear I’m still eating, cleaning, bathing, and taking care of the dog. But I’m gonna get that armor! And then dance.
