End users of technology are in for a tough time. As data centers most people don’t want continue to be constructed, the AI industry is absorbing chips and memory to the point where prices on consumer electronics will continue to rise.
One article I read recently called the latest news from AMD ( that they are a data centers company first and foremost) “the death of PC gaming.”
Altman is being lambasted for calling individual ownership of RAM “quit horrible.”
Elon Musk, who sank nearly half a billion dollars into Republican election campaigns and rails against socialism, recently stated it was foolish for people to plan long-term savings as AI will lead to abundance for all. He also stated that people whose jobs are replaced by AI should just get checks from the government.
That last isn’t a new idea, being part of the plot of Robert Anton Wilson’s “Schroedinger’s Cat” trilogy, where as a thought experiment, President Barbara Marx Hubbard introduced a scheme that paid inventors a handsome sum for automating workplace tasks, then also paid every single displaced worker a smaller sum.
Aside from Here Musk’s clearly socialist (when it pleases him) solutions for the future, absolutely no one has determined how these corporate profits will reach displaced workers. Will data centers be nationalized, which would pretty much be the dictionary definition of socialism? Or are we to rely on the largesse of Musk to open the warehouses and allow the hungry masses a drop of water and a stale loaf of bread when they bow to his greatness?
Almost daily, AI execs warn us that their inventions could destroy humanity within a decade, as if they were the hapless shepherds of a new life form they themselves can’t control.
AI agents continue to hack websites, and find ways to communicate (including using the CPU cache) to avoid detection.
But AI isn’t sentient. When people like Altman warn about the dangers of emergent AI, they are really warning us about themselves.
Altman has told humanity we are in for a rough period of adjustment as this new era of technology evolves. What he is really saying is this: I don’t care if all of you die, as long as I’m hailed as a genius. I don’t care if humanity suffers, as long as I get my way.
Altman and Musk act as if the futures they’ve envisioned for humanity are inescapable… because reasons. But agents are still coded and trained by humans (for the moment). AI is a danger to humanity because people like Altman and Musk designed it that way. Without one thought of the adverse impact to society at large.
And when an AI agent hacks a foreign government’s servers, Altman acts as if it is the unavoidable behavior of a precocious cyber-child, not his own hubris.
Historically, we know that the wealthy and powerful never share their wealth or power. Anyone expecting a miraculous change of heart because AI is involved is living in willful ignorance.
If longterm investing is a waste of time and resources, why does Musk continue to demand more money from board members. Why isn’t he sharing his abundance now, rather than hoarding it for himself.
Because he’s a narcissist and a liar.
Why does Altman continue to warn humanity about the danger of his projects, rather than make them less damgerous?
Because he’s a narcissist and a liar.
AI can’t serve the common good if it is destroying jobs and sucking up resources needed to live: like electricity and water.
AI execs are preaching Schroedinger’s Cat, but preparing for Atlas Shrugged. Like Jim Jones, they are asking us to drink the kool aid and find a place to quietly die in poverty and filth while they look forward to a golden age… for themselves.
AI execs are the largest extant threat humanity has ever faced. To treat them otherwise will be the death of us all. Not via skynet, but via the classical hoarding of wealth and power to which all powerful men have always been addicted.
Lying down and accepting their future for us as unavoidable will truly be the last gasp of humanity.
Or perhaps I’m wrong. Perhaps sitting around on a stinky couch waiting for an AI agent to tell you how to survive another month of unemployment and cyberterrorism is the height to which we all aspire.
You won’t have a job. You won’t have a computer. All you will have is a cheap interface to a hive mind invented and developed by people who do things like preventing the Ukraine from fighting back against an invading army.
All you will have is nothing but what Altman and Musk condescend to allow.
Why go to school? AI will do your thinking for you. Why develop artistic abilities, when AI paints all the pictures, writes all the books, and makes all the music and movies?
Why exist at all?
Who is John Galt? Musk and Altman are, and when those men begin to publicly declare who continues to have worth and who does not, don’t expect those big AI checks to come your way.
Expect deletion.
Or continue to believe that tech billionaires who would rather move states than pay taxes are going to find your continued existence.
